Small-business owners do not need another person telling them to work harder or become more productive. Many are already doing everything they can to keep their businesses moving.
That is what makes Cameron Research’s recent article, An economic update from the trenches, so difficult and important to read.
Drawing on recent interviews with small-business owners, Cameron Research describes rising costs, limited pricing power, financial pressure and deep exhaustion. Some of the accounts are confronting.
The article does not suggest that every small business is in the same position. But it gives a human voice to pressures that broad economic commentary can easily sanitise or overlook.
What better processes cannot fix
Better processes cannot fix interest rates, taxation, wage increases, reduced customer spending or broader economic conditions. Automation will not rescue an unviable business, and AI is not a magic wand.
But when so much sits outside an owner’s control, it is worth looking carefully at what is happening inside the business. Not because struggling owners are to blame, but because unnecessary work and confusing processes place extra demands on people who may already have little time or energy to spare.
When examining recurring work, I find this order helpful:
Eliminate unnecessary work.
Simplify what remains.
Get more from existing tools.
Automate or apply AI only when worthwhile.
The order matters. Automating unnecessary work only helps you do the wrong thing faster.
ONE PRACTICAL STEP
TRY THIS THIS WEEK
Think back over the past week and choose one task you completed more than once.
Ask:
• Does this need to be done?
• Could it be simplified?
• Could the tools I already have make it easier?
You do not need to redesign your business this week. Just identify one recurring piece of friction and see whether you can make the next occurrence a little easier.
It will not solve the wider pressures facing small business. But when time and attention are already stretched, even one less unnecessary task can matter.
